How to Fix the “Can’t Import Database Through phpMyAdmin” Error Due to Large File Size

When working with databases, especially in local development environments like XAMPP, importing large SQL files through phpMyAdmin can sometimes lead to errors. One common issue is when the file size exceeds the default upload limit, resulting in an import failure. Fortunately, this problem can be resolved by making a few adjustments to your XAMPP configuration.

The Error:

When attempting to import a database through phpMyAdmin, you might encounter the following error:

Error: “Can’t import database through phpMyAdmin – file size too large”

This error occurs because the default settings in the php.ini file limit the size of files that can be uploaded and processed. To fix this, you need to increase the allowed file size and adjust the execution time to accommodate the larger file.

The Solution:

Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolving this issue:

  1. Locate the php.ini File:
    • Navigate to your XAMPP installation directory. By default, this is usually C:\xampp\php on a Windows machine.
    • Find the php.ini file within this directory. This is the configuration file for PHP, which controls many aspects of how PHP operates.
  2. Open the php.ini File:
    • Open the php.ini file using a text editor. You can use Notepad on Windows, but any text editor will do.
  3. Update the Configuration Settings:
    • Increase upload_max_filesize:
      • Find the line that starts with upload_max_filesize. It’s typically around line 886.
      • Change the value to 128M (or higher if needed):
upload_max_filesize = 128M

Adjust post_max_size:

  • Find the line that starts with post_max_size, usually around line 735.
  • Update it to match the file size limit:
post_max_size = 128M

Extend max_execution_time:

  • Locate max_execution_time around line 442. This setting controls how long a script is allowed to run before being terminated.
  • Increase it to 300 seconds:
max_execution_time = 300

Modify max_input_time:

  • Find the max_input_time setting, usually around line 452.
  • Set it to 60 seconds:
max_input_time = 60

Save and Close the php.ini File:

  • After making these changes, save the file and close your text editor.

Restart Apache:

  • Open the XAMPP Control Panel and restart Apache to apply the changes. Simply click the “Stop” button next to Apache, wait for it to stop, then click “Start” to restart it.
